CLEVELAND, Tenn. (Aug. 12, 2008)—Cormetech Inc., a leading producer of honeycomb catalysts used in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems for air pollution control, is expanding opportunities for Cleveland High School students to learn about protecting the environment, explore robotics and learn from industrial engineers. The opportunities are just part of what will take place because of a newly established BEST partnership between Cormetech, a member of the Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce, and Cleveland High School. BEST, the acronym for Business & Education Serving Together, is a program of the Chamber of Commerce that unites the efforts of a business and a selected school for the betterment of both.“The Chamber’s BEST program unites the efforts of a business and a selected school with the understanding that the relationship involves a commitment of time, energy and expertise,” Nancy Neal, director of communications, explained. “Just learning about Cormetech’s product, which helps protect the environment from harmful pollutants that can be emitted by many industries, can be an invaluable learning tool for the high school students.”The Cleveland manufacturing facility opened on Old Tasso Road in February 2000. The facility underwent its first expansion in 2002 with state-of-the art equipment and processes and a second expansion earlier this year that increased the plant capacity by about 20 percent. “Cormetech is thrilled about our BEST partnership with Cleveland High School,” Denise Rice, plant manager for the Cleveland facility, said. “Our high-tech manufacturing processes are a ‘perfect fit’ with the school’s engineering program, Project Lead the Way.” Cormetech Inc. offers summer internships to high school and college students in the engineering and technology fields. “We are committed to enhancing the educational process by expanding learning opportunities to real-world applications,” Rice explained. “Our interns experience hands-on data collection, analysis and problem solving in electronics, robotics and manufacturing processes.” Cormetech Inc. was founded in 1989 as a joint equity venture between Corning Incorporated and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). Headquartered in Durham, N.C., the company is the worldwide leading provider of SCR catalysts to the power generation and process industries. Cormetech also offers a wide range of catalyst management services, including catalyst inspection, laboratory testing, installation, startup and in-situ catalyst replacement. Cormetech SCR catalysts are presently installed in over 1,000 units worldwide. Schools in the Bradley County and Cleveland City School Systems have one or more local business partners as part of the BEST program, which is a workforce development initiative of the Chamber of Commerce.
